Since 2017, BetterCare has been transforming senior care in Israel with its elderly care facility management platform, steadily expanding its reach across the sector. Working with KPS to develop their solution helped them triple their client base and keep saving more than 50% a year on engineering.
THE CHALLENGE
In 2019, looking to take their healthcare product further, BetterCare joined forces with KPS. When we entered the project, we found a tough-to-maintain legacy codebase. Rewriting it from scratch wasn’t an option because of tight timelines and commitments to existing clients. We decided to refactor the existing code without making any major changes to the technology stack.
Once we fixed one part, something else broke
Adding new features or fixing bugs in code built using legacy practices was a never-ending struggle. Our team had to take a step back and optimize the codebase so future updates could be made much easier.
Existing client commitments made a full platform rebuild challenging
Due to tight deadlines and ongoing commitments to existing clients, a complete platform rebuild wasn’t feasible. The team needed to deliver improvements quickly to meet client expectations, and starting from scratch would have risked significant delays. While the codebase was outdated and difficult to maintain, BetterCare decided to make targeted improvements, refactoring the existing system to enhance performance and functionality without disrupting ongoing operations.
Without ISO certification, funding from the Ministry of Health was out of reach
BetterCare wanted to get funding from the Israeli Ministry of Health. To achieve that, startups need to be ISO-certified. BetterCare wasn’t there yet.

THE PROCESS
KPS connected BetterCare with our in-house software engineer for a quick start:
BetterCare needed new features built fast and without breaking the bank. So, we brought in our in-house full-stack developer who could handle both the front- and back-end. We got him started on the project within a week.
Our CTO advised the best approach for extending the platform without having to rebuild:
When our developer flagged issues with outdated code during his technical audit, we added our CTO to explore ways to scale the platform without having to rebuild it from scratch. We switched the codebase from pure PHP to Laravel to improve performance and security, as well as recommended React Native as a cost-effective solution for mobile apps.

KPS helped BetterCare achieve ISO compliance to secure funding:
Once the code was optimized, we focused on addressing security vulnerabilities and mitigating risks to ensure the platform met the requirements for ISO certification. ISO compliance strengthened BetterCare’s case to potential investors, helping them secure the funding they needed to grow.
BetterCare switched to the Dedicated Team model:
With the new funding secured and business growth underway, our scope of work expanded significantly. New tasks emerged, including optimizing mobile apps for both Android and iOS using React Native. Given the increased workload and complexity, we recommended switching to a dedicated team model to ensure consistent focus, faster delivery, and the expertise needed to successfully tackle these new challenges.

While our dedicated team worked on revamping BetterCare's web-based solution for elderly homes, we began developing a new product—a mobile app designed for families caring for the elderly. We chose to work as a full-cycle software development provider on this project.
